What losing an earring can teach you:

1) You realize how you relied on said earring. You got the earring on your 18th birthday and have worn it practically every day  in your second piercing (why change?). After 12 happy years together it suddenly decides to jump ship.  You feel betrayed.

2) You get creative in what might have happened to it.  You know you had it on at the end of NYE and you know you didn't bother to leave your apartment New Years day - so it has to be in your apt. Throughout the next few days you slowly remember everything you wore, touched, brushed by. Could it be stuck in my scarf? I wore a sequined dress, maybe it's caught in a sequin! But every burst of creative thinking is dashed when nothing turns up.
3) Then you have flashbacks, flashbacks of washing your face at night and didn't you remember seeing something odd in the drain? Wasn't there a little bubble or something that could have been a little diamond instead? Yes! This is it! You solved the puzzle, it was most definitely a diamond going down your drain!!!!
4) You take a second to contemplate the value and sentimentality of the lost earring. Is it worth it?
5) You realize that you need to ask Santa for more tools next year. Even though you asked Santa for tools (and got a bad ass cordless drill - because hey I'm an independent woman and I cannot be tied down or to a wall, I need to roam as I take things apart!) you didn't ask for the appropriate tools you would need in 2015. Why didn't you ask for a wrench?
6) Face-time is awesome, especially while you are under your sink explaining the situation to your Dad who is trying to tell you what you need to do.
7) Without a wrench it's really hard to do anything to your sink. But you'll still probably try and do it bare handed just to see.
8) You live in a city now. With a doorman. And a maintenance guy. Get over your embarrassment of clogged sinks because you have long flowing locks (seriously what's a gal to do?). Clean your bathroom and let the professionals do this.
9) Maintenance guys may roll their eyes and act like they don't want to be looking for your earring in a nasty drain, but once you say you were going to do it yourself they get all defensive and ask why you "don't believe in Maintenance". Don't steal their joy.
10) Worst case scenarios don't always come true....because there was no earring in my drain after all. Oops. But now my drain is unclogged. Win?
11) After you tear your entire apartment apart, plumbing and all, the lost earring will suddenly jump out at you from your carpet under your bedside table. Maybe it just wanted to feel appreciated and decided to come home after a break.
